Q: Will a standard 42t chainring guard fit?

There is a ring on the outside of the large 38T chainring that would make a guard difficult to fit one on it. This makes it too thick for normal mounting bolts.

Q: Will the 38t ring work as a middle chainring?

Yes it will if you only use as a double chain ring not as a triple. But you will need shorter bolts or a spacer or washer to be able to tighten them.
